We discuss cellular automata (CA) simulations of granular segregation in se
veral different tumbling blenders, including simple rotating drams, V-blend
er shells, drums tumbling end-over-end and double-cones. In all cases, simp
lified CA generates data that agree ge surprisingly well with companion exp
eriments. This implies that a predictive understanding of segregation mecha
nisms in a wide variety of problems may be achievable using relatively simp
le algorithms. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
