Fishponds in aquaculture farms are usually located in remote areas, far fro
m grid supply lines. Aeration of ponds for growing aquatic animals (e.g., f
ish) is required to prevent mortality and to intensify production, especial
ly when feeding is practical, and in warm regions. Aeration systems with ph
otovoltaic power supply may be the appropriate technology from an ecologica
l and economic point of view. In addition, photovoltaic power is very suita
ble for remote developing regions, owing to its simplicity and low maintena
nce. The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate an aeration system
using a paddle wheel connected to a permanent magnet DC motor, and powered
by a photovoltaic power supply. The study was carried out on the coastal a
rea in the center of Israel. The aeration system operated satisfactorily fo
r the demonstration period of more than two years. Copyright (C) 2001 John
