Abstract
Coated papers producers are increasingly searching for tools to optimize th e gloss and caliper profiles from their soft nip One approach, using a prof iling external induction energy system, provides the opportunity for improv ed CD caliper and gloss profiles, enhanced MD gloss levels, increased opera ting speeds or some combination of these attributes. This paper will review field results obtained using external induction energy systems and illustr ate what predictions can be trade based on thermal modelling of the soft ni p calendering process.
