The aim of this essay is to identify the biblical background underlying Una
muno's "Manuel Bueno, martir". This is effected through a meticulous tracin
g of facts and characters present both in the Old and the New Testament. Th
e female narrator assumes the character of an evangelical voice relating th
e life of D. Manuel, a humble parish priest, in whom the figures of Moses a
nd Christ are fused, together which diverse facts related to them. The know
ledge of these relationships is indispensible for a thorough understanding
of Unamuno's text.
