Prorops nasuta Waterston (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) is an exotic parasitoid
imported into Mexico for the biological control of the coffee berry borer (
CBB), Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). This bethylid
has been released repeatedly in coffee plantations of Chiapas State for mo
re than five years. From 1992 to 1996, more than 156,000 specimens were rel
eased in twenty-two colonization sites. Recovery surveys carried out every
three months after release reveal that P. nasuta was never recovered beyond
12 months in any of these sites. Based on these findings, we conclude that
it is unlikely that P. nasuta will become an established parasitoid in Chi
apas, Mexico.
