Abstract
Raman microspectrometry is particularly suitable for the study of the surfa ces of artefacts. This article outlines the advantages of this vibrational technique. Its capability for the identification of the compounds in the su rface layers is illustrated by applications on wall paintings and dyed text iles, and the historical implications of the results are discussed.
