This paper presents a general theory of electron energy loss spectroscopy b
ased on a recently developed basis-independent multiple-scattering formalis
m. This approach allows to establish the cross-section in a physically tran
sparent way. An application to the particular case of spherical waves in a
real space representation is made to show the flexibility of the method. (C
