Abstract
Yellow crystals of [Mn(H2O)(2)(bpy)(C4H4O4)] . H2O were obtained by the rea
ction of 2,2'-bipyridine, succinic acid. MnSO4 . H2O and Na2CO3 in an aqueo
us methanol solution. The crystal structure (monoclinic, P2(1)/c (no. 14),
a 8.294(l) , b = 11.556(1) c = 17.064(1)Angstrom, beta = 95.181(6)degrees,
Z = 4, R = 0.0349, wR(2) = 0.0887) consists of 1D supramolecular helix chai
ns (1)(infinity)[Mn(H2O)(2)(bpy)(C4H4O4)(2/2)] and hydrogen bonded H2O mole
cules. The Mn atoms are octahedrally coordinated by two N atoms of one bide
ntate chelating bpy ligand and four O atoms of two H2O molecules and two bi
smonodentate bridging succinato ligands with d(Mn-O) = 2.139-2.237 Angstrom
and d(Mn-N) = 2.268, 2.281 Angstrom. The helix chains are held together by
pi-pi stacking interactions and hydrogen bonds.
