The main purpose of this article is to present the research that has been d
one on the rehabilitation of number and calculation disorders. It is argued
that theoretically based rehabilitation of arithmetical processing require
s the formulation of a detailed functional diagnosis based on a theoretical
ly driven evaluation of numerical processing and calculation skills. Up to
now, the strategies that have been adopted in this rehabilitation field hav
e mainly consisted in attempts to re-teach lost knowledge via extensive pra
ctice. These therapeutic programmes are described in two domains: the trans
coding of numerals and the retrieval of arithmetical facts. Finally, the au
thors underline the necessity to develop in the near future programmes of r
ehabilitation adopting a more ecological perspective.
