To date, only a few cases of craniopharyngiomas have been studied by magnet
ic resonance (NIR) spectroscopy. We report our spectroscopy experiences wit
h five patients having surgically proven craniopharyngiomas. Proton MR spec
troscopy images were obtained using the single-voxel mode with spin-echo po
int resolved spectroscopy. Very prominent peaks centered at 1-1.5 ppm were
noted in spectroscopic analysis, which probably corresponded to lipid/chole
sterol peaks, correlating with the histological findings revealing high amo
unts of cholesterol in the cyst fluids. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All
