Abstract
There is a constant balance in cancer cells between division and death. The malignant phenotype is associated with a continuing cell cycle or 'immorta lization'. Telomeres, structures that cap the chromosomes, are related to c ell longevity and are regulated by a ribonucleoprotein called telomerase. T his review describes the possible roles of telomeres and telomerase in the malignant process. Eur J Gastroenterol Hepatol 13:889-890 (C) 2001 Lippinco tt Williams & Wilkins.
