The purpose of this study was to determine the types of instructional techn
ology service positions available in higher education. The authors collecte
d and analysed 449 job announcements and, based upon an analysis of the pos
ition descriptions, were able to develop a taxonomy of service positions. T
he taxonomy includes eight categories: Instructional Technologist; Instruct
ional Designer; Distance Learning Co-ordinator; Instructional Technology Ma
nager/Administrator; Technical Support Specialist; World Wide Web Specialis
t; Instructional Technology Librarian; and Miscellaneous. Common responsibi
lities and qualifications for each type of position are discussed in the pa
per. Salary information for each type of position is also included. The pap
er concludes with a discussion of the results and recommendations for futur
e research.
