A control-oriented nonlinear dynamic Sl engine model is developed to repres
ent a spark-ignited engine over a wide range of operating conditions. The m
odel includes intake manifold dynamics, fuel film dynamics, and engine rota
tional dynamics with transport delays inherent in the four-stroke engine cy
cles. The model is mathematically compact enough to run in real time, and c
an be used as an embedded model within a control algorithm or an observer.
The model is validated with engine-dynamometer experimental data in steady
and transient operating conditions, and its accuracy over a wide operating
range is proved to be within +/-5%. Also, the model can be used in the desi
gn and development of a powertrain controller.
