The potential for energy conservation and CO2 reduction by the year 2010 in
Japan based on the application of several superconductive applications app
lied to power system, industrial, medical, information and communication te
chnologies, is evaluated in this paper. Based on our analysis, the potentia
l savings from energy conservation can be as great as 100 TWh. Also, potent
ial CO2 reductions are expected to be 10 million carbon-tons. The most sign
ificant result is that more than half of energy conservation is expected in
information and communication technologies such as computers and switches.
The underlying reason for this result is based on the survey's expectation
that significant growth in energy consumption of these technologies will o
ccur over the next decade. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserv
