The proton-rich nuclei Al-23 and P-27 were studied using the Mg-24(Li-7,He-
8)Al-23 and Si-28(Li-7, He-8) P-27 reactions. respectively. Several energy
levels are observed in each nucleus. The mass excess of Al-23 was measured
to be 6.773(28) MeV and the mass excess of P-27 was measured to be - 0.670(
41) MeV. The first excited state of Al-23 has been resolved from the ground
state for the first time at an excitation energy of E-x=0.550(20) MeV. The
first excited state of P-27 has been measured for the first time at an exc
itation energy of E-x = 1.199(19) MeV. The astrophysical implications of th
ese results for the reaction rates of Mg-22(p, gamma) Al-23 and Si-26(p, ga
mma) P-27 for the nucleosynthesis of Na-22 and Al-26 in Ne novae will be di
scussed.
