The muon flux expected to be detected on Earth from the radio loud Active G
alactic Nuclei Markarian 501 during its high state as happened in the first
half of 1997 has been calculated in the present work. The analytical estim
ate of the muon spectrum is made using the standard cascade equation for mu
ons and latest photopion production cross section obtained from the fit to
the DESY ep collider experiment. The integral muon energy spectrum generate
d by the photoproduced pions, from the direct production of muon pairs and
photoproduced charm particle decay have been calculated separately. In this
work we have included muon production both from the direct charm decays as
well as the charm decays through D-meson decays. The Monte Carlo parametri
sation of muon flux from photopions is also used to estimate the photoprodu
ced muon flux from this object. We have also discussed about the possibilit
y of detection of muon events from Mrk 501 by a large area muon detector at
the South Pole location with its angular resolution and cosmic ray generat
ed muon background. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
