The median adaptive predictor (MAP) is widely used in many modem-day lossle
ss picture compression algorithms, including the new JPEG-LS international
standard. The basis of MAP is the crisp median operator. In this article we
describe how we may fuzzify the MAP and obtain two new "soft" predictors,
We compare the performance of the new predictors with the crisp MAP by comp
ressing several test pictures and show the new predictors always perform be
tter than the crisp MAP. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science BN. All rights reserved.
