In 1995, Jordan's annual emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs) were approxim
ately 13.8 X 10(6) tonnes, of which fossil-fuel combustion contributed more
than 85%. It is likely that CO2 emissions, from energy operations, will ri
se to about 20 x 10(6) tonnes in the year 2010, when the energy consumption
will be twice that in 1995. There are many viable CO2-Mitigation measures
identified for the energy sector, some of these can be considered as attrac
tive opportunities. However, their implementation requires the removal of c
ertain obstacles, such as the lack of awareness, lenient energy pricing pol
icies and lack of access to appropriate technology. (C) 2001 Elsevier Scien
