The author discusses the possible role for Croat expatriate scientific comm
unity in Croatian science. He argues that proper leadership could engage Cr
oatian expatriate scientific community in supporting the foundation of a mu
ltidisciplinary science institute in Split, Croatia. The institute could pl
ay a key role in regional economic development focused on health, energy, a
nd environment. Establishment and maintenance of a program Of Such magnitud
e requires a diminished and more flexible role of the government and introd
uction of the private sector in a government-private partnership. Developme
nt of necessary attitudes and economic base will take time.
