Abstract
Gas carburising trials conducted in laboratory and industrial conditions co nfirm that a nitrogen-free 50/50 mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen pr omotes a higher carbon transfer coefficient than conventional atmospheres b ased on nitrogen/methanol or endothermic gas. As a consequence, the duratio n of short process cycles can be reduced by up to 40%. This new approach, u nder development in France, is also claimed to offer better controllability and uniformity of treatment without loss of metallurgical quality.
