S. Majewski et al., Optimization of dedicated scintimammography procedure using detector prototypes and compressible phantoms, IEEE NUCL S, 48(3), 2001, pp. 822-829
Results are presented on the optimization of the design and use of dedicate
d compact scintimammography gamma cameras. Prototype imagers with a field o
f view (FOV) of 5 x 5 cm(2), 10 x 10 cm(2), and 15 x 20 cm(2) were used in
either a dual modality mode as an adjunct technique to digital X-ray mammog
raphy imagers or as stand-alone instruments such as dedicated breast SPECT
and planar imagers. Experimental data were acquired to select the best imag
ing modality (SPECT or planar) to detect small lesions using Tc-99m radio-l
abeled pharmaceuticals. In addition, studies were performed to optimize the
imaging geometry. Results suggest that the preferred imaging geometry is p
lanar imaging with two opposing detector heads while the breast is under co
mpression. However, further study of the dedicated breast SPECT is warrante
d.
