The surface impedance presented to a plane TE-wave by a wedge of high contr
ast is derived on the basis that the wedge possesses some absorption. it tu
rns out that, over most of the surface of the wedge, the impedance is const
ant. The value of the constant coincides with that obtained by regarding a
side as an infinite plane interface. Near the edge the impedance is no long
er constant. Both the magnitude and phase can deviate substantially in this
region from their asymptotic values. Nevertheless, the region of non-const
ancy is never large for the cases considered and does not extend beyond a f
ree space wavelength from the edge.
