A computer assisted investigation has been made on the nature of complexes
of uranium(VI) with malonic acid. ne formation constants have been determin
ed experimentally by monitoring hydrogen ion concentration. ne distribution
of the metal ion amongst the complexes formed with the above carboxylic ac
id has also been computed. The formation constants have been refined with t
he computer program, MINIQUAD75 using the primary alkalimetric data. The pr
edominant complexes formed are [UO2(H2C3O4)(2)](2-), UO2(H2C3O4) and [UO2(H
2C3O4)(H2C3O4H)](-). The distribution pattern of different species varies w
ith the relative concentrations of the metal ion and the ligand. The variat
ion of stability with surfactant concentrations is found to be the cumulati
ve effect of various factors like electrostatic interactions, dilution effe
ct and competition for hydrogen ion associated with the nature of micelles.
