Abstract
We investigate the switching bistability between the Phi and Phi+pi twist s tates in liquid-crystal cells with a three-terminal electrode structure. Ba sed on general nematohydrodynamic equations and a modeling potential of sur face anchoring, numerical calculation shows that dynamic shear flow and ele ctric-field-induced breaking of surface azimuthal anchoring are essential t o the realization of the switching bistability observed experimentally.
