J. Benedict Warren inaugurated the Coleccion Quiroguiana with three new stu
dies of the life and work of Vasco de Quiroga, the humanist scholar and jur
ist who in 1538 became bishop of Michoacan, Mexico. The first of these titl
es is a facsimile edition and study, accompanied by previously unpublished
documents, of Quiroga's will, along with the inventory of his possessions.
The second is a documentary compilation of his career as a judge in the cit
y of Oran, North Africa, where he demonstrated a judicial capacity ahead of
his time. The third title is a facsimile of the Ordenanzas of the pueblos-
hospitales of Santa Fe, as well as an exhaustive comparison of their relati
onship to More's Utopia.
