Abstract
Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the construction of two-dimensi onal- (2D-) like defect modes in a recently proposed 3D photonic crystal st ructure. These modes, which are confined in all three dimensions by a compl ete photonic band gap, bear a striking similarity to those in 2D photonic c rystals in terms of polarization, field profile, and projected band structu res. It is expected that these results will greatly facilitate the observat ion of widely studied 2D photonic-crystal phenomena in a realistic, 3D phys ical system.
