S. Gal, Parliamentary distrust and approval in Grenoble at the time of the League:the "moyenneurs" in the parliament of the Dauphine, REV HIST, (618), 2001, pp. 403-431
When the city of Grenoble chose the League in September 1589, the parliamen
t which stood in the town refused this union. The members of the parliament
, led by the first president Ennemond Rabot d'Illins (who was tormented by
eschatological anguishes and imbued with classics), tried to show a median
way: neither for Henri IV nor for the League. These "moyenneurs", inspired
by Plato's Republic, wanted to safeguard order and peace against chaos than
ks to Justice. But this utopia failed. Isolated, caught in the crossfire of
royalists and leaguers, the parliament shattered. However, the "moyenneurs
" had played a moderating role of mediators and had permitted to maintain t
he dialogue between the belligerents without radicalization and fanaticism.
