Abstract
When heated in benzene with paraformaldehyde and boric acid, 1, 1 ' -methyl enebis(2-naphthol) easily decomposes to 1,2-naphthoquinone 1-methide, which dimerizes into a spirodimer. The by-product of the reaction is 14H-dibenzo [a,j]xanthene.
