Compounds CoI2 . Ur . 2.5H(2)O (I) and CoI2 . 4Ur . 2H(2)O (II) were synthe
sized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Crystals I are orthorhomb
ic: a = 18.351(9) Angstrom, b = 10.681(4) Angstrom, c = 10.185(8) Angstrom,
space group Pca2(1), Z = 4. Crystals II are monoclinic: a = 8.786(2) Angst
rom, b = 11.169(2) Angstrom, c = 9.380(2) Angstrom, beta = 102.52 degrees,
space group P2(1), Z = 2. In compound I, the ligands are separated to form
complexes of different compositions, [CO(Ur)(2)(H2O)(4)](2+) and [CoI4](2-)
. The [Co(Ur)(4)(H2O)(2)](2+) complexes are found in compound II. In both c
ompounds, the monodentate urea molecules coordinate the Co atoms through th
e carboxyl oxygen atoms. Crystals I and II have layered structures.
