Abstract
This paper surveys the ellipsoid and spherical atom models, as well as some consequences of their current application to X-ray crystallographic studie s and the immediate prospects of their use in crystal chemistry. The discus sion focuses on crystallographic van der Waals radii (vdWRs), a new variety of vdWRs.
