This article discusses the theoretical development of a nursing interventio
n program to enhance recovery over the first year following sudden cardiac
arrest. Concepts from social cognitive theory and domains of concern follow
ing sudden cardiac arrest underpin a tailored and standardized nursing inte
rvention. The nursing intervention program is designed for delivery by mean
s of telephone and through the mail. Testing of the nursing intervention pr
ogram is underway using a clinical trial design.
