Abstract
Let X be a smooth projective curve of genus g greater than or equal to 2 an d E a rank r spanned vector bundle on X with deg(E)/rank(E) less than or eq ual to g - 1. Here we give lower bounds for deg(E) refining the classical t heorem of Clifford. Most results are for vector bundles with rank less than or equal to 5.
