The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to investigate the
N-2-air convection caused by the application of magnetic field gradients. W
hen the magnetic field was applied (1.5 Tat the center of an electromagnet)
and N-2 gas was injected into air toward a weaker magnetic field, the surr
ounding air was found to be drawn toward a stronger magnetic field forming
a vortex, white the N-2 gas was pushed out. The maximum velocity of the N-2
gas with the field was about five times larger than that without the field
. These results agree well with the results of numerical simulations.
