The mechanism of the influence of sulfur-type additives on rolling fatigue
life was investigated. It was found that sulfur-type additives tend to make
the fatigue life longer at higher temperatures and higher concentrations.
Some examinations of the effects of sulfur-type additives on the factors in
fluencing the rolling fatigue life found that iron sulfide is formed on the
rolling surface and makes the fatigue life longer. While the facility of i
ron sulfide formation on the rolling surface controls the fatigue life, att
ention also needs to be paid to the lubrication conditions such as the roll
ing material, oil temperature, and reactivity of sulfur-type additives to u
nderstand the fatigue life with sulfur-type additives.
