Abstract
Ground-state and thermodynamic properties of the S = 1/2 XY model are calcu lated by a Green's-function approach and compared with recent quantum Monte Carlo data. The maxima in the temperature dependences of the longitudinal and transverse uniform static spin susceptibilities are explained as effect s of magnetic short-range order.
