Abstract
We discuss the double-exchange model for bilayered manganites, taking into account the effects of two-fold degeneracy of the e(g) levels. The obtained phase diagram successfully explains the sequence of ferro- --> canted --> A-type antiferromagnetic states, observed with the increase of the hole con centration. The direction of the spin magnetization, obtained from the anal ysis of the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, is expected to be paralle l to the plane of the laver. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
