Alumina-tungsten carbide composite was prepared by a hot-pressing process.
It is shown that the mechanical properties of alumina matrix materials coul
d be greatly improved after introducing a dispersion of tungsten carbide pa
rticles. Flexural strength and fracture toughness of the Al2O3-WC composite
added with 6 vol.% WC particles and sintered at 1450 degreesC reached 581
MPa and 5.13 MPam(1/2), respectively. The microstructure of Al2O3-WC compos
ite was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning elect
ron microscopy (SEM) analysis. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re
