Structural and functional data on elongation factor G (EF-G) are reviewed w
ith regard to nucleotide exchange, GTP hydrolysis, mechanism of action of f
usidic acid, and functional roles of the EF-G structural domains in translo
cation. Biochemical data are correlated with structural dynamics of the EF-
G molecule on interaction with various ligands. Data on EF-Tu are also cons
idered, as EF-G and EF-Tu share certain structural and functional features.
