We examined the effect of the sigma (1) receptor agonist, 1-(3,4-dimethoxyp
henethyl)-4-(phenylpropyl)piperazine (SA4503), on the acquisition of the co
nditioned place preference response to subcutaneously administered (-)-nico
tine in rats. (-)-Nicotine, but not SA4503 or vehicle, produced a significa
nt conditioned place preference response. Pretreatment of animals with eith
er 1 or 3 mg/kg of SA4503 significantly attenuated the conditioned place pr
