This paper presents two damping algorithms for explicit dynamics computatio
ns. These algorithms are intended to provide damping for the high-frequency
structural responses that occur under low pressures. One of the algorithms
uses a dimensionless form of the Navier-Stokes viscosity and the other use
s a velocity smoothing technique. Both algorithms can be used to effectivel
y damp the high-frequency oscillations. Examples are provided to illustrate
the effects of both algorithms. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights
