An integrated way of viewing workpiece function performance is presented. T
his is called a function map. Some of its attributes are explained. Using t
his function map a classification scheme for functional performance is deve
loped. The way in which surfaces relate to function is investigated with re
spect to these maps. New boundary conditions are revealed thereby allowing
conventional parameters to be used with confidence so avoiding a new parame
ter rash. The whole approach is pictorial rather than analytical for clarit
