The electrodeposition of metals from aqueous solutions is a longstanding te
chnique, commonly known as electroplating. Now, electrodeposition is being
used to produce ceramic coatings. Two such processes are known as electroly
tic and electrophoretic deposition. They may be applied to protective coati
ngs, biomedical implants, electronic devices, chemical sensors, piezoelectr
ic transducers, displays, and electrode materials. Electrodeposition offers
important processing advantages and allows new possibilities in the design
of materials and devices. This paper describes recent developments in the
application of electrodeposition for fabrication of fuel cell membranes.
