This paper discusses the main stages of the development of Fourier spectrom
etry. Certain technical characteristics of the Fourier spectrometers develo
ped at GOI are presented. The main types of attachments used for Fourier sp
ectrometers are given: microscopes. diffuse-reflection attachments. multipa
ss gas cells. frustrated-total-internal-reflection attachments. multiple-fr
ustrated-total-internal-reflection attachments, and photoacoustic cells. Th
e possibilities of using multiarea detectors in both dynamic and static Fou
rier spectrometers are indicated. Methods are proposed for using, Fourier s
pectrometers with multiarea detectors as the coding element and as the wave
front sensor in video spectrometers. (C) 2001 The Optical Society of Americ
