We carried out an exact density matrix analysis for the nonlinear Hanle eff
ect in an open V-type level system. Steady-state analytical solutions of th
e Liouville equation have been obtained and the dependence of the populatio
ns of the upper and lower states on the applied magnetic field is discussed
. These curves, corresponding to experimental ones when fluorescence or abs
orption is detected, are dependent on the excitation and decay rates and ca
n be used as a tool for analysing population inversion in laser transitions
.
