A rapid method for the separation of Po-210 from Pb-210 was developed utili
zing extraction of triisooctylamine (TIOA)/xylene in HCl+H2O2, medium. Polo
nium in the form of PoCl62- was extracted into TIOA phase and Pb-210 remain
s in the aqueous phase. Lead-210 was determined by alpha -counting of its g
randdaughter. Po-210 ingrown from Pb-210 for some period of time. Distribut
ion of Po-210 and Pb-210 in TIOA and aqueous phases was investigated in var
ious concentrations of HCl media. Hydrogen peroxide was used to further dec
ompose organic matter and to remove sulfur to prevent its deposition on the
silver disc. The improved procedure resulted in a good chemical yield (80-
95%) and a good alpha -resolution.
