A. San Juan et al., On-site and on-line analysis of chlorinated solvents in ground water usingpulse introduction membrane extraction gas chromatography (PIME-GC), J SEP SCI, 24(7), 2001, pp. 599-605
The objective of this research was to monitor the concentration of chlorina
ted solvents in groundwater using pulse introduction membrane extraction ga
s chromatography (PIME-GC) developed in our laboratory. This technique uses
membrane permeation to isolate VOCs from the aqueous sample. The gas chrom
atography based instrument can identify different VOCs components at the pp
b level. In this study, PIME-GC was used for two different applications rel
evant to ground water remediation. The first was site assessment, where wat
er samples from drilled wells were analyzed on-site using the field portabl
e instrument. The results were compared to results from parallel analysis b
y standard laboratory based methods. The PIME-GC was also used for continuo
us monitoring of influent streams at the pump and treat facility. This stud
y showed that it was possible to carry out both types of analysis at low pp
b levels using PIME-GC.
