Abstract
In this Overview, common themes of the accompanying News & Views on RA, SLE , IDDM, thyroiditis and MS are discussed. A unifying concept for the develo pment of these and other autoimmune diseases should incorporate genetic pre disposition, environmental factors and immune dysregulation.
