Abstract
We have identified electronic transitions tightly localized at a single oxy gen atom adsorbed on the Cu(110)-(2 X 1) surface, by means of scanning tunn eling microscope (STM) light emission spectroscopy. The emission spectrum m easured with the STM tip located directly over the oxygen atom shows two pe aks corresponding to states located similar to 200 and similar to 300 meV a bove the Fermi level of Cu. These peaks are identified with unoccupied stat es localized at a single oxygen atom. (C) 2001 Published by Elsevier Scienc e Ltd.
