Abstract
The dome system is a new patented solution. in the field of shell cons truction It is an ideal combination of such modern construction method s as pneumatically supported formwork and the spray system for placing concrete and insulation. Construction work can be carried on under th e sheath regardless of the weather. With the dome system it is possibl e to dispense with the expensive scaffolding and formwork required for conventional shell construction using reinforced concrete. This means that less material is used, which has a beneficial effect on the cons truction costs. The first clinker silo using the IDS dome system was b uilt in. Germany in 1991, followed by two more silos on the same site in 1995. A report is given below of the construction of these two silo s at the Lubeck cement works. They each consist of a cylinder surmount ed by a hemisphere which projects 19 m into the industrial landscape a round Lubeck. The dome system offers new and varied opportunities for economical construction of large dome structures. As a silo it is exce llent for storing all types of bulk materials. Plans are also in hand for using this silo system, which can be built with diameters up to 12 0 m, as a multi-compartment system.
