A. Notni et al., Non-constrained prosthesis for replacement of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTP) - Short-term results, Z ORTHOP GR, 139(4), 2001, pp. 326-331
Purpose: Does the ReFlexion(R) Implant System provide an alternative in ope
rative treatment of hallux rigidus? Methods: We have been using the non-con
strained prosthesis since April 1997. 26 implants were reviewed 13-41 month
s after insertion, analysing radiological and clinical data. A questionnair
e was answered by the patients. Results: Surgery was either performed cemen
tless (8 cases), as a hybrid, i.e., only phalangeal part cemented (14 cases
), or cemented In both components (4 cases). So far, 3 joint replacements h
ad to be removed for pain. Radiological signs of loosening around the cemen
ted phalangeal components were evident in 11 cases. There was no correlatio
n between radiological loosening and discomfort. Conclusions: The implant c
an reduce pain distinctly. Patients satisfaction with the treatment is rela
tively high. The range of movement in the first MTP is still limited. In ou
r opinion the ReFlexion(R) Prosthesis can be quoted as an acceptable altern
ative for surgical treatment in advanced cases of hallux rigidus. In case o
f failure a conversion to the distraction-arthrodesis is possible.
